I’m getting better at being a Californian. At least one day out of my weekend must be dedicated to some kind of outdoor activity, whether its taking a drive somewhere new or going on a hike on one of our own trails before dinner. Most of the time, this happens on Sunday, after which I have spent the days before catching up on errands and things I have put off during the week. And the great part about having as many roommates as I do, is there is most likely someone around who wants to join. This weekend, my roommate Mila and I drove just over the Golden Gate to Marin Headlands and Rodeo Beach for a short hike and some amazing scenic views of the City. On our way, we could see the “great wall of fog” rolling in and I hoped that it would clear up by noon so we could soak in some good views. It was a little colder than we expected (no surprise, there) and after our hike, we found a bench near the beach to watch surfers brave the waves and the frigid water. Even with a wet suit, I couldn’t picture my warm southern-born body stepping foot in that cold water. Watching them chilled both of us to the core and our bodies called for a warm revival— hot coffee for me, a chai latte for Mila. Luckily the fog dissipated after noon and the sun brought to life the bikers, cars and sailboats passing over and under the Golden Gate Bridge, allowing a clear view of the City I have really come to love. Although getting into the city takes a lot of time, gas and money, its always worth the trip to see something new and spend some time with friends away from the farm.
Speaking of the farm, its tomato season! We have some delicious varieties of tomatoes coming in and ton of basil...which can only mean one thing- PESTO! There isn't anything quite as delicious as homemade pesto with basil straight from the garden. I think I've been living off of that, tomatoes and mozzarella for about a week or so and I am perfectly okay with it. Our eggplants are also looking beautiful and healthy and I cant wait for those to come in so I can try some new recipes. It takes a lot of work to keep vegetables healthy and productive but its so rewarding to harvest the fruits of your labor and turn them into a delicious meal that came straight from the earth and into your own hands.
